I got high a while ago and listened to Elon Musk talk about his Starship that will take humanity to Mars very soon… and at some point he brought up the Hitchhiker’s guide to the Galaxy. A brilliant book, definitely read it.
Anyway, in the book, we learn how a group of super smart pan-dimensional beings constructed a giant computer called Deep Thought in order to answer the Big Question. The Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything. The enormous supercomputer would calculate that over a period of 7.5 million years.
And you know which answer popped out?
Yup, that’s the answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything.
What the computer also mentioned was… that the answer was meaningless, because the beings never knew what the big question was.
What if we’re similar to those creatures? What if we’re wanting an answer, yet don’t really bother to ask the right questions?
What if life has no meaning? What if love was not exclusive? What if you could buy happiness in a pill? What if you didn’t have to sleep or eat? What if universities would be banned? What if art could cure cancer? What if love is the answer to everything? What if we’re not the only species in the universe? What if we’re all very corrupt, ugly and somewhat evil inside? What if social media made you sad?
I’m sure you can find many such questions yourself.
To not completely skip any answers, I’ll share one with you. Most of the credits for this one going to Vipassana. I think that you should never ever believe something just because somebody says it’s true. You should always discover if that truth is true for you as well. It may be. Or it may not be.
Go have a 3h walk and think about the big parts of your life. You know, your job, relationships, health and such. Ask yourself some radically different questions, and see what happens. Worst case scenario, you missed 3h of Netflix and moved your body.
Drop some interesting and mind-warping questions in the comments below. Let’s inspire each other.
P.S. One last question. What if you could live quite happily without knowing the answer to the big question?
