Soya Sauce, Beans and Stoicism

March 26, 2017 By Bostjan 2 Comments

If you follow my content, you know I am a big fan of stoicism. The basis premise of stoic philosophy is denying yourself of various pleasures. Deny yourself of good food, sex, clothes, material things, positive emotions, success, whatever. As a result you toughen up. It’s a personal choice.

And when you have no access to those things as a result of fate/chance/shit happens, you will not be as sad/frustrated/destroyed. It sort of helps to keep you in balance and equilibrium.

So where am I going with this?

I ate a buttload of junk food yesterday at 4am after a night out, and I’ve been craving and eating junk and sugar more and more lately. Figured I need to cut these cravings before they run wild – stoicism.

Well, I had a really stoic dinner today. It consisted of 4 fried eggs and 2 cans of beans. In terms of nutritional value and macronutrient profile this meal is pretty good actually. But the taste? Well, far from amazing.

What to do? Add soya sauce. Besides the fact that it’s almost pure salt (not that healthy), soya sauce just adds some flavor. Almost anything you put soya sauce on, will become better. Even if you mess up and the dish your cooking tastes terrible, there’s a good chance soya sauce will save it.

Till next time,

Bostjan

Ryan Holiday introduced me to stoicism. You should definitely check out his last 3 books if you haven’t done so already! Really good reads.
